Walkers In Action
Tucson Walkers Set a Spirited Pace

A group of Tucson walkers guided by optometrist Dawn Messer meet regularly for Spirited Walks in the Sabino Canyon area. Dawn formed the group after meeting Carolyn at the annual Life Beyond Cancer retreat at Miraval Resort. Carolyn’s walks at the retreat introduced walking as a component of healing in times of emotional or physical upheaval. Dawn carried the message back to cancer surviors in her community and launched a Spirited Walker program with guidance from Carolyn, who met with the group in December 2009.

Marathon Walkers Train Body and Spirit

Training to walk a marathon offers members of The Spirited Walkers of Eugene, Oregon, a route to personal achievement and enhanced fitness. Now in its ninth year, the eight-month training program is coached by sports therapist Kay Porter, with guest appearances from Carolyn. Many members of the group work up to the 26-mile Portland Marathon challenge with a preliminary half-marathon held in Eugene each spring. For information: Spirited Walkers of Eugene.

Words From Walkers
“You were so awesome to walk with and I’m blessed to have met you. Thank you for what you do.”Terri Gaertner, CURE Day of Caring, Denver, 2008

“You are a great teacher (content, energy level, connection with a large group). I’ve practiced my learning in my walks over the week. Thanks for sharing what you’ve learned.” —
Mary Alice Brown Johnston, PhD, Willamette Valley Cancer Center, 2008

“I found our walks to be one of the most rewarding experiences of the weekend. You are a good teacher, no, a great teacher. I really had a feeling of opening up all my senses and it was so relaxing.” James Lasker, MD, Life Beyond Cancer Retreat – Miraval

“Your walking program really clicked for me, especially the use of chants and visualization. I used to avoid hills, but now I'm chanting "I am strong, Yes I can" to get past the inner demon that wants to stop. It really works! And, the two inches off my hips (due to increased walking) doesn't hurt a bit either!” —
Cheri Hughes, Dallas, TX

“Loved your book! Many great new ideas, and I loved your writing style also. I shall keep it near and refer to it as a reminder of my ‘better walking self’.”New York, NY

“I'm really enjoying the book. It's kind of like having a personal trainer who keeps you going when your resolve wavers.”
Tucson, AZ

By allowing me to reconsider such a fundamental activity as walking, she has given m e a tool to help quiet the static in my head so that I may be able to hear the deeper voice within.
